About Human Systems Dynamics

Human Systems Dynamics (HSD) helps you see and influence patterns in human relationships. When people interact at work or play, complex patterns emerge. HSD tools help you cope with those patterns when:

  • Resources are tight and demand is high.
  • Your old tools and techniques fall short.
  • Players are many, diverse, or constantly changing.
  • Culture and/or organizational habits are obsolete.
  • Too much or too little control makes people crazy.
  • There are so many moving parts you don’t know where to start.

No standard intervention works in every situation. HSD uses complexity science to open multiple options for action. It embraces your traditional approaches, offers new tools and techniques, and adds new insights into why some interventions are successful and others are not. With HSD, you view situations from a systemic level. You move beyond symptoms to address complex causal relationships for individuals, teams, organizations, and communities. You learn to use many different tools to see and influence patterns as they emerge.

Who can benefit from using HSD?

  • Professionals in organization development and human resources
  • Internal and external consultants, facilitators, coaches and trainers
  • Agents for change in any field that requires working well with people to achieve goals

Dr. Glenda Eoyang

Photo of Dr. Glenda EoyangDr. Glenda Holladay Eoyang is the founder and leading voice in the field of Human Systems Dynamics. Integrating chaos and complexity as applied to individual, group, and organizational systems, her pioneering work focuses on theory development, practice, and training. Since 1988 she has explored the frontiers of mathematics, philosophy of science, and information, physical, and social sciences to synthesize and map the complex adaptive dynamics of human systems. Innovative theories make her applications powerful, and effectual applications make her theories practical. Her books include Facilitating Organization Change: Lessons from Complexity Science with Ed Olson (Jossey-Bass/Pfeiffer, 2001) and Coping with Chaos: Seven Simple Tools (HSD Institute Press, 1996). In 2003, Dr. Eoyang edited a collection of case studies Voices from the Field: An Introduction to HSD (HSD Institute Press, 2003). Dr. Eoyang works with a broad range of human systems including communities, government bureaucracies, business and industry, and educational institutions. Her current areas of interest include evaluation, leadership, and strategic planning in emergent environments, and she serves as Executive Director of the HSD Institute.
